12:12 2016 Meet Sami

December 1, 2016

Meet Sami.  Here’s her story –

“After fighting a prior malignancy when I was 15, I later found my chemo days were not over. At the age of 19 and one month into my sophomore year of college, I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in my chest wall. I had to take the year off of school and underwent the standard protocol of intense inpatient chemotherapy over the course of 10 months, along with 6 weeks of radiation. It made me very sick, and was physically one of the hardest years of my life. Thankfully, the tumor was responding very well to treatment and I was pronounced in remission in the summer of 2014. I’ve relapsed twice since, and I’m now currently in my fourth battle with cancer, still fighting Ewing’s Sarcoma. I’ve tried several types of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy. One of the most frustrating things as a patient is that Ewing’s Sarcoma doesn’t have a protocol for recurrences, and the existing treatments are not all that effective. This leaves patients with clinical trials and experimental treatments as the main hope for a cure. This is why more funding is so desperately needed. One of the most stressful decisions is picking what new therapy to try when doctors know so little about it and can’t tell me what they think will work. I’m hopeful with increasing awareness and donations, more research can be done to better understand this disease and how it can be stopped.”
