12:12 2016 Meet Kristen

December 7, 2016

Meet Kristen.  Shared with us by her Mom, Shelly -
“My freckle-faced eight-year old came home from school one day telling me her right knee hurt. She was kicked on the playground so she took some pain medication and we carried on with our normal schedule. Three days later, the lump near her knee still hurt but there was no bruising. This seemed odd, so we bundled up and went to urgent care for an x-ray. That was the day that changed our lives forever.

Here we are six years later fighting the fight against Ewing Sarcoma. Kristen has endured 17 surgeries including an above knee amputation, > 40 scans, 60 days of radiation, and many years of long and difficult cycles and types of chemotherapy. We even traveled to and lived in Japan for seven weeks this past summer for immunotherapy treatment.

The cancer keeps returning and we keep fighting.

Despite all of this, Kristen, now 14, has been a normal teenager with a normal life. She has learned how to downhill ski, loves to swim, and does well in high-school. She has a busy social life with some very special friends and is known for her smile and quiet strength. Kristen does not want to be known as the girl with cancer. She simply wants to be who she is, a 9th grade student who loves her friends, family and many pets. We take each day and live it with hope and courage.

Currently, Kristen is still fighting and is on targeted therapy. As a family, we control what we can and we live fully. We share Kristen’s story and hope that the future will bring new and improved treatments for her as well as the many others fighting this battle. Please consider donating to the 12/12 Campaign to fund Ewing Sarcoma RESEARCH. “
